Coffee with Colleagues: The Time I was interviewed by Charlotte Duckworth

They say you should never meet your heroes, but they never said anything about being interviewed by them! I am a huge fan of Charlotte Duckworth’s psychological thrillers, so when she reached out to chat to me via one of my lovely authors, Lizzy Barber (also a genius writer – thanks Lizzy!) to ask me to feature on her blog, I may or may not have squealed a little with excitement (I think you know the answer!)

Happy Birthday – RM turns 5 today!

Five years ago today, I sat down at the kitchen table in our newly rented flat by the beach in Brighton, Adelaide and started one of the scariest things I’ve ever done.

Going freelance was never something I’d planned to do. Ever since I decided on publishing as a career back in school, I had totally envisaged myself working my way up the editorial ladder in a publishing house, not expecting an easy path, but at least with the surety of a salary at the end of the month, irrespective of what had happened the month prior. But then, we decided to take a leap and travel to the other side of the world for an adventure of a lifetime, which meant I stepping away from that dream path into something quite unknown, in a country far away from home.

When I started my freelance business, I had no idea if I’d have any clients at all. I thought I’d get the occasional job from my old publishers, for sure, but scaling up to a point where freelance work would match my old income, if not more? No way! I had savings, and this was just meant to be a year out, and any income would supplement our travels.

But somehow, to my amazement, it took off. I worked on some very different jobs – my first publisher work was with Mills & Boon – and with some fabulous authors, who’ve now gone on to reach new heights themselves – bestselling Simon McCleave and Ned Kelly Award-nominated Jo Dixon, I’m looking at you. But this was all part of the adventure, and great, it was working out. But once we got back from Australia, it was time to get back to reality and find a traditional publishing job again.

Then the pandemic happened.

Podcast: In Conversation with Hobeck Books

Last week, I was delighted to be invited by Hobeck Books – an indie crime publisher that I love – on to their weekly books podcast, Hobcast. It was an amazing experience to talk about all things publishing and editing, how I got started, my approach to editing as well as advice for aspiring authors on how to deliver their best work.

I’m so excited to share that the episode is now live, and you can listen below, or wherever you listen to your podcasts, including Spotify.

Thank you to Adrian and Rebecca for having me on the show!

Small Business Saturday: Festive gift ideas for writers and bookworms

All across the country, the cost-of-living crisis is hitting people hard, therefore, I appreciate that many people will be thinking twice this gifting season. And if you’ve purchased all your presents on the compelling Black Friday deals, I don’t blame you. However, most small businesses can’t compete with the level of discounts offered by the big companies on the Black Friday weekend, and so it’s likely to be a tough year for us indies out there, many of whom are still riding the wave of impact from the Covid shutdowns.

But even if you can’t justify buying small this year, you can still support a small business or indie author this Small Business Saturday in other ways that won’t cost you a penny.

See some of the suggestions above, but so even if you can’t afford to purchase small this year, engaging on social media, and more importantly sharing positive reviews when you’ve really loved someone’s work, makes all the difference.

So if you partook of the bargains this year, and can spare even a little bit of the money you’ve saved on a steal of a deal, please consider making a purchase – no matter how little – from a small business or indie author as well as we prepare for the festive season, because when you shop small this Christmas, somewhere a real person will be doing a grateful happy dance!
